Locals react to Cleethorpes parking price increase

Parking tariffs in Cleethorpes are set to rise from Monday 6 June, following the first review in a decade.

North East Lincolnshire Council accepted a review of parking charges in the resort to raise tariffs at a number of car parks.

The council stated that the increases will bring the resort further into line with other comparable seaside locations, where charges have been higher for some time.

Locals have reacted to the change in tariffs after Jubilee celebrations bring visitors in.

“The trippers aren’t coming because of the cost of fuel and now they’re going to discourage the locals too.” one commented on social media.

“When you would have thought they would be encouraging people to visit the area what do they do….put up the parking charges.” another added.

There are currently restrictions on the promenade due to the new RNLI station being constructed, signs direct those coming into Cleethorpes to park at Grant Street car park, which is set for its own £3.6 million expansion, which in theory should see increased usage currently.

“I would have thought it would be better to reduce it to encourage visitors to the resort.” one frustrated local wrote.

There were those who took a different side however, parking during busy periods can be difficult.

“First rise in 10 years…..£5.50 to park all day Or £7 for the promenade parking all day is still very reasonable.” a user commented.

The Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, Cllr Philip Jackson: “People in North East Lincolnshire have benefitted from lower pricing of parking in certain areas since 2012 when tariffs were last reviewed. Car parking tariffs in Cleethorpes have fallen below the current rate of other resorts such as Scarborough and Skegness for many years.

“The council must also take into account that inflation is currently running at a high level, which has increased operational costs. Please be assured that any money made via parking revenues is reinvested into the borough’s car parks.”

Signage in the carparks in question has been updated, prior to the changes coming into effect on Monday.
