By Match reports: Two wins out of three for Cleethorpes Cricket Club sides
Two of the three Cleethorpes Cricket Club sides in action came out on top in their fixtures at the weekend.
Cleethorpes’ first team suffered defeat at the hands of Appleby Frodingham on Saturday after both sides came into the game in decent form.
The hosts were put into bat and rode their luck early on following some good new ball spells from Josh Knapton and Tom Morris (2-29), who were causing issues and deservedly picked up wickets, including the dangerous Jordan Neil.
A missed chance to dismiss Kieran Lindley in single figures went begging and he went on to make 74 on a pitch that no one else looked fluid on all day. Mayank Mishra again bowled with superb control to get 1-27 and Knapton picked up wickets at the death to finish with 4-58 – his best figures in a Meggies’ shirt.
The reply got off to the worst possible start, with overseas Neil dismissing four of the top five and Cleethorpes’ reply didn’t recover. A comical run out to dismiss John Mansfield after looking well-set summed up the second half of the day.
Cleethorpes seconds got back to winning ways with a five-wicket home win over Scothern.
The visitors won the toss and had no hesitation batting on what looked to be a flat wicket on a warm afternoon.
Cleethorpes started well with Freddie Lumby accounting for the first two wickets, reducing Scothern to 28-2 in the 13th over. Both Lumby and Kris Hall bowled tight opening spells on a pitch offering little for the bowlers.
With Will Bailey and opposing skipper Tom Gregory at the crease, the visitors began to build towards a strong total. The pair navigated the change in bowlers well in the middle overs, adding 91 for the 3rd wicket.
Cleethorpes turned to Lumby (3-13), who made the key breakthrough to remove Bailey for 48 after he was smartly stumped by Paul Ridley. Alfie Deans (3-24) joined the attack and quickly got in on the action, removing the well-set Gregory for 51.
Jack Holmes and Kris Hall finished off the innings with the latter picking up a late wicket to finish alongside a smart run out from Ryan Harrison to remove the dangerous Alex Stapleton for 45. Scothern ended on 191-9.
Cleethorpes opened their innings with Jayden Stocks and the returning Joe Farmery. The pair added 44 inside the first five overs, with Farmery hitting the opposition bowlers to all parts of the ground on his way to a rapid 25, which contained six boundaries.
But Stapleton then struck twice to remove Stocks and Farmery to leave Cleethorpes on 44-2. Hall and Eddie Carlton then came together and continued in positive fashion, finding the boundary regularly to add 88 for the 3rd wicket. Hall looked in excellent form, finding the fence nine times during his blistering maiden 50 for the side.
Stapleton finally made the breakthrough to remove Hall (53) and leave the score 132-3 after just 20 overs. George Carlton joined younger brother Eddie and kept the score ticking over, adding a further 30 for the 4th wicket. Eddie Carlton passed 50 for the 3rd week running before Stapleton struck again to remove the skipper for 51.
Cleethorpes’ nerves must have been jangling when Ryan Harrison was removed for nothing and they still required 30 runs to win. George Carlton (25*) and Paul Ridley (2*) efficiently saw the Meggies home inside 32 overs to claim a much-needed win and all 20 points.
Cleethorpes thirds won their 7th game out of eight away at Caistor seconds to stay in top spot.
Caistor won the toss and elected to bat on a very dry wicket. Will Hollamby and Arifkhan Waklizai opened the bowling and the former took his first of four wickets from his fourth ball after clean bowling opener Ben Woolly.
Rasoulkhan Ahmadzai came on and produced a tight spell in tandem with Hollamby, who took his second wicket when Oliver Barrick was caught by Akhbar Amadzai at mid-wicket.
Akhbar chipped in with two wickets for 36 from his eight overs, while Max Chapman came on and removed the middle order to finish with 4-15. Hollamby was brought back to break the stubborn last-wicket partnership to finish with 4-17 and leave the hosts 126 all out.
Matt Thompson and young Freddie Warton opened the batting in reply and, after a tricky early spell, both settled down to compile a match-winning partnership of 82 before Warton was caught for 21.
Hanzullah Niazi came and went, leaving Rob Cowlam and Thompson to see the game out for another impressive victory. The latter batted through undefeated for 64 and Cowlam finished 24 not out to earn the 20 points for their side.
