By Water ‘good’ at Cleethorpes beach says Environment Agency
The water at beaches stretching across Cleethorpes and Humberston has been judged ‘good’ after samples were taken between May and September this year.
The judgment is a considerable step down from the ‘excellent’ rating achieved four years ago.
The update comes after Cleethorpes lost its Blue Flag status due to an ongoing situation with the water quality.
The Blue Flag status highlights the world’s best beaches and resorts, taking in aspects such as sustainability, environmental factors, and safety measures. In May North East Lincolnshire Council confirmed that they did not reapply for the award due to issues with the beach’s water quality.
Back in April the Environment Agency warned people against swimming in waters in Cleethorpes and Humberston after it was discovered that sewage had been dumped the water rendering it unsafe to swim in.
A spokesperson for the Council said: “Cleethorpes is a hugely popular destination and we take pride in making it one of the best seaside resorts on the East coast.
“We actively monitor water quality and we work with our partners to make improvements, but many factors that affect it are out of our control, such as flooding and extreme weather.”
According to the Environment Agency, 302 bathing waters in England met the ‘excellent’ standard of the Bathing Water Regulations. Sadly, the statistic did not include beaches in North East Lincolnshire.
