MP Sir Edward Leigh “honoured” to be sanctioned by Russian government

The MP for Caistor and according to reports, around 200 other MPs were included in a list to be sanctioned by Russia.

Sir Edward Leigh has said he felt ‘honoured’ to be on a list of sanctioned British MPs, allegedly down to Vladimir Putin.

It is reported around 287 MPs supported the UK Governments response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the response of sanction against them in relation to this.

The Russian Foreign Ministry accused MPs of “groundless whipping-up of Russophobic hysteria” in Britain.

The MP responded saying it was a “back-handed compliment for standing up to unprovoked and unjustified act of aggression against Ukraine.”

“Since the Russian invasion began, I have backed the Prime Minister’s policy to give direct aid and support to the Ukrainian people and their government and I will continue to do so.

“People across the world will continue to love and appreciate the beauty of Tolstoy and Tchaikovsky while condemning the actions of the current regime in the Kremlin.” he said.

“Our Government must continue to work hard to secure an advantageous peace in Ukraine and to help the Ukrainian people survive and rebuild.” he added.

Sir Edward Leigh is a Conservative MP for Gainsborough, his constituency includes Caistor and Market Rasen.

There are other Government members to be sanctioned including Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey, Jacob Rees-Mogg and Northern Ireland Minister Conor Burns.

According to reports, Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers is also included in the list.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Tuesday he would be happy for Ukrainian forces to use the British-supplied weapons against Russia.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said NATO had effectively already entered the war with Russia “through proxies”- suggesting the same will be thought of others.
