Covid hospitalisation rate hits highest since February

The rate of Coronavirus-related hospital admissions has hit their highest level since February, new figures show.

The level stood at 8.4 per 100,000 people, according to the UK Health Security Agency’s weekly surveillance report.

That figure is up from 7.5, the report found.

This is the highest figure since the week to 21 February, when the UK was still in lcokdown and in the midst of a third wave.

The death rate in February however, was almost three times what it is now, with most of the population now vaccinated.

Sir Patrick Vallance, the government’s chief scientific adviser, spoke on BBC Radio 4’s Today program, warning the UK to be prepared for a plan B.

“There is considerable uncertainty into which direction this goes.

“It’s wrong to think that the build up of immunity is an all or nothing – it’s a sort of protective barrier that will reduce the spread of the virus so we need to monitor this carefully over the next weeks and months.

“This [plan B] is obviously something the government will have to consider carefully but we need to be ready to move fast if that occurs.”

This is in contrast to Boris Johnson batting away any suggestion of another lockdown, saying that there is “absolutely nothing to indicate” the country going back into lockdown.
