South Yorkshire Special Constable wins force award
Last week, a South Yorkshire Special Constable won a force award after being nominated seven times for his work with South Yorkshire Police (SYP).
Barnaby Peech won the award for Special Constable of the Year.
The force awards celebrated South Yorkshire’s officers, staff, volunteers and community members who have impressed on the job over the last 12 months.
For the past four years, Barnaby has been a Special Constable for the force’s response team in Ecclesfield.
He is reportedly a lively man who is always willing to support others and advance his skills.
He has regularly come to work on days off for pre-planned operations and events.
During the last two years, it is believed that he has completed more than six times his minimum hours.
Special Constable Barnaby Peech told SYP: “It was a real honour to be nominated for this award and amazing to actually win it.
I love being a Special Constable and giving something back to the community.
“Over the last few years I have learnt so much that has enabled me to apply and be successful in becoming a regular officer.”
Special Chief Officer Stephen Merrett added: “Barnaby is a real credit to the Special Constabulary and the force.
“His work ethic and dedication is exactly what we look for in a Special Constable.
“To be nominated seven times is testimony to what his colleagues think of him and I am so pleased he has been honoured at this year’s force awards.
“Special Constables are an invaluable support to the force and add resilience to officers.
“They receive the same training and have the same powers as regular officers.
“Reading the nominations for Barnaby reinforces how much Special Constables are needed and are thought of by their colleagues.
“Well done Barnaby.”
SYP are currently recruiting Special Constables for their force.
If you would like to volunteer for a minimum of 16 hours a month, you can apply here.
