Graffiti in Cleethorpes branding Covid-19 “fake” sparks outrage amongst locals

Graffiti in Cleethorpes which brands Covid-19 “fake” has appeared on a wall in the seaside resort, sparking outrage amongst local residents.

Sprayed in red paint, the bold and eye-catching graffiti in Cleethorpes reads “fake Covid-19” and “death by vaccine”.

A Facebook post on the Haverstoe Ward Forum, displaying pictures of the graffiti, reads: “This is insulting to everyone who has been bereaved because of the Covid pandemic. I have lost a family member to Covid.”

One comment on the post reads: “Insulting to those of us who’ve worked on a Covid ward for the last 12 months too.”

“It’s so very disrespectful and personally offensive to those who have lost loved ones and also the brilliant work of the NHS,” says another.

Councillor Keith Brookes of the Haverstoe ward in Cleethorpes said:

“This kind of behaviour is the worst type of graffiti, worse than foul language. I don’t think they believe what they say, at least I hope not, but it’s just anti-social behaviour of the worst kind.

“The police should if possible arrest them and a custodial sentence given but we all know that’s not going to happen. I am sorry for the public who have been affected by the terrible disease. They have enough to think about besides this if they see it.”

A spokesperson for North East Lincolnshire Council has said: “Graffiti like this is unsightly and removing it takes our staff away from their usual duties.

“It is also upsetting to all those who have lost loved ones to Covid-19 and all those who are working tirelessly in the fight against the pandemic.

“If you have any information about who did this, please contact the police using the non-emergency number 101.”
