Residents take action over boy racers
Cleethorpes residents have taken to social media to express their growing frustration over disruption caused by boy racers.
According to reports, people are using the boating lake for speed-time trials in the early hours of the morning, keeping residents awake.
Although riding off road motorbikes can be a popular pastime, such behaviour is frequently dangerous and noisy, generating lots of complaints to police.
It is illegal to ride any motorbike in public open spaces such as parks, play areas and on pavements.
This can result in prosecution for the rider and in some cases the parents, who are held accountable for the actions of their children.
Now, the activity of nuisance bikers has become so bad that residents are attempting to take action, involving both the police and the council.
Speaking on the ‘Haverstoe Ward Forum‘ Facebook group, one local said:
“After week of being woken up at 2am by the loud screeching noises on the boating lake, I’ve tonight phoned the police and reported it.
“It honestly makes living round here a nightmare, having to listen to it every night 7 days a week, especially when you have to be up early for work.
“We’ve lived here 20 years and this is the worse it’s ever been.”
Several residents say they have now contacted the police.
Among the potential solutions, locals have suggested introducing speed cameras between the leisure centre and Meridian Point, as well as blocking overnight access to the boating lake.
It is felt that a gated barrier would also prevent the ongoing issue of travellers occupying the area.
Ward Councillor Keith Brookes has supported the idea of installing a gated barrier at the car park.
Humberside Police says it remains “resolute in efforts to bring bike thieves and those who ride bikes in an antisocial way to justice.”
A meeting of local business owners and North East Lincolnshire Council officials is scheduled to take place later this month to discuss the issue.
