Updates on the Dominic Cummings lockdown row
As the debate continues, here are the latest updates on the Dominic Cummings lockdown row.
Amid growing frustrations as the UK lockdown continues, many are calling for Dominic Cummings’ resignation, after the PM’s chief aide drove 260 miles from his London home to his parents’ estate in County Durham at the height of restrictions in March.
He has defended his decision to travel more than 200 miles during lockdown, despite much of the public having refrained from seeing vulnerable family members, and having adhered to social distancing measures for what is now over a month.
Mr Cummings confirmed that at the time, his wife and their child, were present at his parents’ estate.
He alleges that his wife and son were displaying symptoms of coronavirus and were self-isolating in part of the property, and his wife was unsure of her capacity to care for the child.
Mr Cummings insisted he did not break the law, saying “I believe that in all the circumstances I behaved reasonably and legally, balancing the safety of my family and the extreme situation in Number 10”.
He said: “I don’t regret what I did” and added that “the rules make clear that if you are dealing with small children that can be exceptional circumstances and the situation I was in was exceptional circumstances.”
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has defended Mr Cummings’ actions, saying that he “acted on instinct.”
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has said that Mr Johnson had “failed a huge test” in not sacking Mr Cummings and was “treating the British public with contempt”.
Cummings said that as his parents have no neighbours, he didn’t feel there was any risk in his actions.
He says he has not considered resigning.
