Britons urged to ‘use common sense’ as parks packed on Bank Holiday Monday

As beaches and parks across England are packed this Bank Holiday Monday, authorities are urging Britons to ‘use common sense’.

Images have emerged as hundreds of people flock to beaches, parks and other outdoor spaces to enjoy the hot weather today.

This follows the easing of lockdown restrictions earlier this month, meaning that people are now permitted to engage in unlimited outdoor exercise, including sunbathing and picnics.

Councils and local authorities across England have urged people to think twice, and or use common sense in considering whether social distancing is possible, before visiting such locations.

Police have been called to disband large gatherings across the country as a result of the influx of visitors.

A social media user passing Swanpool Beach in Falmouth reported seeing the “car park overflowing, hundreds of cars on surrounding roads, beach packed”.

In west London, police say they were called to reports of a “large group gathering” at Ruislip Lido, and urged the public to “use common sense”.

Ahead of the bank holiday, tourism bosses had pleaded with the public to stay away from beauty spots.

Some have dubbed today’s packed beaches as the “Cummings effect”, as senior adviser Dominic Cummings is embroiled in a row for travelling 260 miles to his parents’ estate during the lockdown.

According to the rules, people should keep two metres away from anyone who is not in their household, and should not meet more than one person from another household at a time.

Photographs of open spaces across the country show that in many cases, this has not been adhered to.
