Mums who find themselves in unhappy relationships chat more to baby boys.
Mums who are unhappy with their male partners spend more time talking to their first child than those in happy relationships.
But according to a study, it only applies if the child is a boy. As mums in unhappy relationships did not speak more to girls. The research also found that mums were much more chatty than dads when looking after the baby.
Those mums who said the quality of their relationship was low used around 35 percent more words to her son than a mother whose relationship was average. The more dissatisfied a couple were in their relationship the more the mother spoke to her son but not her daughter.
It is not known what the content of the talk was, so it is not clear if the mother was complaining to her baby or talking positively.
The research suggests that it is possible that the mum is trying to compensate for the poor relationship she has with her partner by putting more time and effort into her other male social partner which is her son. It is possible that mothers see their daughters as mini versions of themselves rather than their partners. And that may be why mothers only seem to compensate when they have infant sons.
