Diet coke can make you gain weight.
When you are trying to lose weight you probably find yourself reaching for diet drinks such as Diet Coke. But low-calorie beverages could actually lead to weight gain according to a new study.
Researchers from the George Washington University found that youngsters who drink low-calorie drinks consume about 200 extra calories a day than those who drink water.
The results challenge the belief that diet or low-calorie beverages cut calorie and aid weight management.
The study looked at the diets of 7,026 children and teens from 2011 until 2016. The results showed that the participants who drank diet sodas took in about 196 extra calories a day than water drinkers.
The findings suggest that the best choice for kids and teens is water.
Researchers are hoping that what they have found will encourage youngsters to ditch sugary beverages and diet drinks, in favour of good old water.
For a healthy alternative, they suggest flavoured sparkling water with a splash of 100% fruit juice or water with a few pieces of fruit mixed in.
Those who drank sugary beverages consumed an extra 312 calories a day.
