Match report: Clee Town slip to home defeat against Brighouse
Cleethorpes Town were beaten at home by Brighouse Town in the league on Tuesday evening.
Two second-half goals from the visitors were enough to ensure they took a 2-0 victory back down the M62 in the final game at the Myenergi Stadium this season.
In what was the Owls’ third game in five days, they made five changes from the weekend’s fixture, with Tom Jamieson, Josh Smaller, Jon Oglesby, Alex Flett and Jack McMenemy all coming into the starting lineup.
Clee started the game brightly and forced a couple of early corners, while Tomlinson was once again looking lively and had a goal correctly ruled out for offside.
Jamie Hassall in the Brighouse goal then made two excellent saves to deny McMenemy and Harvey Tomlinson in the same passage of play.
Tomlinson was involved yet again 24 minutes into the contest, with the young forward hitting a goalbound daisy-cutter that deflected about a foot wide.
Will Annan had another chance for the hosts just before half-time, but his low drive was comfortably saved by Hassall to ensure the sides went in level.
The visitors emerged from the dressing rooms with much more purpose and the contest was turned on its head by two quickfire goals.
Jack Boyle finished coolly from about 15 yards on 55 minutes before Mo Qasim fired an effort across McKeown and into the bottom corner of the net on the hour-mark.
With their backs now firmly against the wall, Clee battled hard to find a route back into the game, but nothing was really going their way.
When Jamieson sprinted into the box before appearing to be upended, all eyes turned to the referee, who waved away the appeals.
Then he turned down another apparent infringement in the area, with the hosts having to accept it wasn’t going to be their night, as the Owls fell to a defeat in their final home game of the campaign.
