Johnson will ‘almost certainly’ win confidence vote says Cleethorpes MP
This morning it was announced that Prime Minister Boris Johnson will face a vote of no confidence from his MPs later today.
Triggered by 54 letters of no confidence being submitted by MPs, the vote determines how many Tory MPs still back the PM.
If he receives 180 votes of no confidence, then he will no longer be Prime Minister.
If he wins the vote, then his protected against another such move for a year.
Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers has issued his own response after many cabinet members have shared their support for Mr Johnson.
Mr Vickers said that a vote of confidence at this time is “not in the best interests of my constituents or the country at large.”
He added that the PM will “almost certainly win the vote” and that the media focus will then “switch to how many votes were cast against him and his authority will be undermined; that is not to anyone’s advantage.”
“We need a government that is focussing on the energy crisis, the war in mainland Europe, tackling the NHS backlog that was created by the pandemic and so much more. In the unlikely event of him being defeated the Conservative Party will spend around six weeks electing a new leader – six weeks that should be spent addressing those issues I mention above,” he added.
The Cleethorpes MP said that he in “no way defends some of the events at Downing Street that I have previously described as “irresponsible, reckless and unacceptable” but by any objective assessment we need a government that is not distracted by a leadership election.
“The last election was unusual in that many of the votes were personal ones for Boris Johnson and MPs should think very carefully about overturning the wishes of the electorate. In due course voters will pass their verdict in a General Election; that is as it should be.”
