By Sea Road hoardings approved despite controversy
The proposed hoardings that will decorate the vacant Sea Road demolition site have been approved, as of Wednesday 11th May.
The hoardings that surround the dormant demolition site that has sat vacant for almost two years will remain for at least 18 months.
Plans to redecorate the boards first emerged in February following the controversial revelation that £1m in funding intended for the redevelopment of the site was spent on demolishing the former Waves nightclub and improving nearby footpaths.
There have been concerns raised already over the current hoardings obstructing the view of the road, especially approaching from the high street onto the promenade.
It is said, however, that “The proposal would not prejudice public or highway safety and is acceptable in terms of visual
amenity, as such it is recommended for approval.”
A spokesman for the authority has said ‘It is important to highlight that this is a key site in the tourism heart of the resort, and the hoarding and new graphics are likely to be in place for at least 18 months which encompasses the main tourism season.
“The aim is for the signage to be informative and pleasing to the eye.
“These graphics will further enhance the work which has already been completed in Sea Road and with the North Prom art installations as part of the ongoing Cleethorpes regeneration programme”.
There have been some that have disagreed with the proposals or suggested alternatives.
“Would be great to allow local graffiti artists to paint a fantastic design. Zero cost to the council and residents.” One user wrote.
“It could be a great temporary advertisement space for local businesses and places of interest” One commented on social media.
“I still do not understand why they had to demolish an iconic building which served a purpose and whilst needing a facelift looked so much better than a demolition site. And the lovely flower beds.” One user said.
“Why can’t they listen to what the people want and how much it’s gonna cost after all it’s our money they are spending ”
“Why hasn’t the site been cleared and made into a garden with a seating area similar to Grimsby riverside with sculptures and trees natural is always best.”
