Cleethorpes MP says new constituency boundary is ‘the best option’

Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers has reinstated his support for the new boundary commission which would combine Grimsby and Cleethorpes into one constituency.

Scartho, Humberston, and New Waltham would be grouped together with Immingham, Barton, and Brigg into the South Humber constituency.

However, these plans have received major backlash, with the majority of residents providing negative comments.

Many feel that the two towns have different focuses and priorities and therefore wouldn’t benefit from one MP.

The goal of the merger is to balance MP’s seat sizes so that each has roughly 74,000 electors, ensuring votes have equal weight.

Martin Vickers has previously given his support for the plans, only objecting to the proposed Sout Humber name for the new boundary.

When asked how the proposal would affect him as Grimby’s MP, he stated that it is impossible to predict the political scene in the future.

Mr Vickers said: “I would prefer that the Cleethorpes constituency stay as it is but there is no way that the existing Grimsby seat can keep the same boundaries and meet the quota of electors that the legislation demands without it takes voters from Cleethorpes, so like it or not we have to accept that the proposals are the best option,”

“As to whether the changes are favourable for me well that will be decided by the votes at the time and anyone who predicts what the political scene will look like in two years is just taking a stab in the dark.”
