Bird Flu warnings issued in Cleethorpes
Cleethopres residents have received letters that confirm a local Bird Flu outbreak.
Residents in Cleethopres woke up today to find a government issued letter confirming they are either in, or near the outbreak zone.
The letter reads:
“I am contacting you as the UK Chief Vet because there has been an outbreak of Avian Influenza (also known as bird flu), in your area”
“You have received this letter because your property is in, or very close to a declared AI protection or surveillance zone”
The letter has stressed if you keep chickens, ducks or geese, game birds, pigeons or other birds, even as pets, you need to take action as soon as possible.
It is advised that people who keep birds should register their animals and report any sudden illness or deaths.
If you keep more than 50 birds, you are required by law to register the animals.
Additionally, if you suspect your birds may be infected with the disease, you are again, required by law to report it.
The news follows confirmation of an outbreak at a local poultry farm last month.
The H5N1 virus, commonly known as bird flu rarely passes onto humans but could be dangerous to humans if caught.
The area affected has not yet been confirmed.
You can register you birds at Surveillance@apha.gov.uk
