Beacon Academy to expand under £3.5 million rebuild

Beacon Academy could see a major expansion thanks to £3.5 million being funded by the government through their School Rebuilding Programme.

The academy was listed amongst 50 other schools last year to qualify for the government cash in the second round of nominations.

The council will discuss plans to expand the capacity of pupils from 600 to 750 later on today in a cabinet meeting.

Between £3 million and £3.5 million would be funded by the Department of Education under the governments School Rebuilding Programme, which aims to create new builds or fund major refurbishments for 500 schools across the country in the next decade.

Accounced in the second wave of 50 schools, the Cleethorpes based academy is the first to be announced in North East Lincolnshire.

Other schools in the area have been consulted about increased spaces, but the plans for Beacon Academy remain the priority.

The expansion would be a dramatic turnaround for the school, as pupil numbers dropped to as low as 192 under its previous name of Holy Family Catholic Academy.

It reopened in 2017 after being taken over by the Wellspring Academy Trust.

Year 7 has now been oversubscribed for three years in a row, and its senior leadership have been recognised in national awards.

Schools in the government programme were prioritised on the condition of the buildings, with those in the poorest condition getting priority.
