Match reports: Cleethorpes cricket sides record two victories
Two of the three Cleethorpes Cricket Club sides in action at the weekend won their fixtures.
The 1st team beat Hallam and the 3rds saw off Caistor 2nds, while the 2nds suffered defeat at Hartsholme.
Despite half the pitch at Hallam being wet and a treacherous outfield, the ground was deemed fit enough to play and to start on time for the 1st team’s game.
After winning the toss and bowling, the hosts got off to a good start thanks to some decent batting.
Tom Morris pegged Hallam back with two wickets in his opening spell, while Matthew Owen and Mayank Mishra took over in the middle overs and bowled with consistency.
That spell – combined with two run-outs – left Hallam all out for 91. Owen took four for 33 from his 15 overs to lead the way for Cleethorpes’s bowlers.
In response, Cleethorpes got off to the worst possible start, as Tom Keast managed to hit a legside full toss to point. That was followed by the wickets of Bill Kirby and James Hubball, leaving the Meggies at 10-3.
Some middle-order grit and a fluent 40 not out from Mishra saw the visitors home to ensure they picked up 12 points.
Cleethorpe’s 2nd team slumped to their first league defeat of the season, losing by 170 runs to newly-promoted Hartsholme Cricket Club.
Having won the toss and elected to bowl on a pitch that was underwater earlier in the week, Cleethorpes were encouraged by an early wicket from Alfie Deans, leaving the hosts 27-1 after nine overs.
Loose bowling throughout the innings, however, didn’t allow Cleethorpes to build any pressure and a well-drilled Hartsholme side amassed 227 from their 50 overs, including 38 extras.
Jack Holmes was the only man to make a meaningful contribution with the ball, finishing with figures of six for 43 from his nine overs, with his second spell producing five wickets for 20 runs.
The visitors struggled with the bat in reply and, at one point, they looked close to registering a league-low total at 15-9.
Cleethorpes’ only resistance was offered by Paul Ridley (20) and Alfie Deans (5*), adding 29 for the last wicket to take their side up to 44.
The Hartsholme opening bowlers Bothma (5-10) and Shillito (4-6) deserve great credit after bowling superb opening spells by not allowing the Cleethorpes batsman any chances to score early on.
Despite the Cleethorpes 3rd team losing the toss and being asked to bat on a flat wicket at Chichester Road, they managed to chalk up a victory against league leaders Caistor 2nds.
The early loss of Max Chapman brought Rob Cowlam in to partner young Oscar Davey. That pairing got the score moving with a 70-run partnership before Cowlam was caught and bowled for 38.
Nigel Fanthorpe and Akbar Amadzai came in and departed quickly, while Si Taylor got another partnership going with Davey, as they registered 86.
Davey was next to go for after hitting a fine 78, leaving Taylor 58 not out and the total sitting at 207-5.
Taylor and Arifkhan Waklizai opened the bowling with tight spells, with the former claiming one for 10 in his nine overs.
Will Hollamby and Andy Macfarlane both produced decent spells, as Macfarlane took two for 26 from his nine overs.
Wickets were hard to come by on an excellent wicket, with Akbar picking up one for 29 in his nine overs and young Liam Macfarlane got in on the act with one for 22 from his four overs.
The visitors closed on 137 for five to claim a superb victory for Cleethorpes that pushes them up to second in the table.
