Match reports: Cleethorpes cricket sides record mixed results
Three Cleethorpes cricket sides recorded a mixed bag of results in their fixtures this week.
Cleethorpes Town’s 2nd and 3rd teams lost to Broughton and Holton le Clay, while Cleethorpes East Lindsey claimed a victory over Grimoldby.
The 2nd team’s cup campaign came to an end after suffering a three-wicket defeat at Broughton.
After consultation between both captains and the umpires, the game was reduced to 25 overs per side in an attempt to complete the fixture before the rain arrived. Cleethorpes lost the toss and were asked to bat on a tricky surface.
George Carlton and Kris Hall opened the batting in positive fashion, pushing the score to 23 before a bizarre run-out left the latter stranded.
Carlton, who reached 50 before being stumped, helped take the score to 70 alongside Osmond. Wickets then began to fall regularly, with John Mansfield the only remaining batter to look fluent, as he reached a valuable 32 from 30 balls. The innings ended on 130.
Cleethorpes opted for Osmond alongside Lumby with the new ball and they took control with the score at 19 for one off seven overs.
With the rain falling and conditions proving tough with the ball, Cleethorpes’ change in bowlers allowed Broughton back in the game with 74 runs coming from the next seven overs.
Cleethorpes again pulled themselves back into the tie thanks to four wickets from Andrew Severn and a tight spell from Edward Carlton, who picked up the dangerous Green.
With Broughton at 91 for seven, Cleethorpes then wasted three straightforward chances to remove Mitchell. Two of those chances arrived before he reached double figures, with him eventually recording a match-winning 39 to steer Broughton home.
Cleethorpes will feel disappointed not to have progressed after having various chances to win the game.
Elsewhere, Cleethorpes’ 3rd team fell to a narrow defeat against Holton le Clay. They won the toss and asked their opponents to bat first on a very wet wicket at Blossom Way.
There was a great opening spell from Si Taylor, who recorded one for nine from eight overs alongside Arifkhan’s five overs for just 15.
Runs were hard to find, as Will Hollamby bowled six overs for 19, Andy Macfarlane was hit for just 29 off nine overs and Akhbar picked up two wickets for 14.
But loose bowling and dropped catches after the drinks break gave the visitors momentum to finish on 183 for three.
Cleethorpes started their reply well, with an opening 50-run partnership between Ian Marland and Max Chapman, as the pair hit 30 and 24.
Chapman departed after being caught behind and Rob Cowlam’s three left Cleethorpes on 72 for three off 16 overs.
Nigel Fanthorpe joined Marland to add another 10 before the latter was caught. Akhbar then came and went for a quick-fire 10, while Taylor and Fanthorpe put together an 85-run partnership to take their side to the brink of victory.
With only 20 needed from the last four overs, Fanthorpe was run out and wickets then fell quickly, as Cleethorpes closed on 177 for eight with Taylor closing on 57 not out in the defeat.
Cleethorpes East Lindsey came out on top in their match against Grimoldby. After winning the toss, Cleethorpes batted first amid humid conditions.
Alfie Deans hit 23 to go alongside Sam Middleditch’s 29 to get the Meggies off to a flyer, with the score sitting at 55 off 11 overs before the first wicket arrived.
This led to a struggle for the rest of the batsman to get set and, following some poor shot choices, a mini-collapse came at the hands of Russ Hayward, who picked up five wickets for Grimoldby.
That left the hosts in trouble at 89 for eight before some late resistance from chairman Paul Hewstone on his comeback and a handy performance from Craig Brown got their side scraping their way to a defendable 123 all out.
Grimoldby never really got going in reply, with tight bowling and good fielding putting the Reapers under increasing pressure. Four wickets for Akbar Ahmadzai and three for Deans were the highlights as the visitors were bowled out for 94, handing Cleethorpes the 20 points and two wins from their opening two games.
