Match report: Cleethorpes Town suffer narrow defeat to Dunston
Cleethorpes Town were narrowly beaten at home by Dunston in the league on Saturday afternoon.
The 1-0 defeat against their promotion rivals was a big blow to the Owls’ playoff hopes, as it meant they dropped to sixth in the table.
Manager Nathan Arnold decided to change things up, opting for a 3-5-2 in a bid to unlock his squad’s full potential and get back to winning ways.
Dunston started the best in front of another decent crowd at the Myenergi Stadium, with Michael Fowler having an effort chalked off by the assistant’s flag.
As the first half wore on, Clee started to come into the game and on-loan Harvey Tomlinson was causing real problems for the visitors.
The young midfielder provided a delightful pass to Jon Oglesby, who curled his effort just wide of the goal. Shortly after that, Tomlinson went close, but his shot flew inches wide.
Just before the break, Jordon Cooke was on high alert in defence, making a well-timed tackle to ensure the teams went in level at the break.
In the 57th minute, James Anderson dropped a Leon Dawson corner but, in the ensuing scramble, the ball was eventually cleared away from danger.
Not long after that, the Owls’ old nemesis Carl Finnigan got the winner. A corner was flicked on at the near post and the striker stooped low to find the target.
Clee kept battling right until the end, but a leveller never arrived. There was, however, a controversial moment, in which the host thought they’d claimed a deserved equaliser.
But to immense frustration from the home fans, the referee ruled that there had been an infringement on Anderson before the ball was bundled into the net.
The Owls will be hoping to pick up a more positive result when they head to runaway league leaders Worksop Town next week.
