Cleethorpes MP ‘fully supports’ daily acts of worship in schools
Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers recently secured a debate in Westminster Hall to discuss the importance of religious education in schools and daily acts of worship.
Don Valley MP Nick Fletcher spoke in the debate, stating: “Christianity is a force for good and has been the bedrock of our country since the days of King Alfred the Great (848-899). It promotes spiritual moral and cultural development of all our children and young people.”
He went on to state that by law all schools should observe a daily act of worship but that in many school this is not being followed.
He went on to ask Minister Nick Gibb what he could do to ensure that “Parliament’s wishes were honoured in our schools.”
“I was pleased to hear him explain that if parents’ complaints to schools are not resolved then the Department for Education could then be involved,” Mr Fletcher added in a post shared to Facebook.
Mr Vickers has spoken on this issue, securing the debate after some parents complained that their children were not learning about Christianity or observing a daily act of worship.
Sharing his stance on the issue, the Cleethorpes MP said: “My debate centred on the need to ensure that all young people receive an education that includes Religious Education taught by specialist teachers, without which there can be no appreciation of the country’s history and culture. In today’s Britain we also need an appreciation of other faiths without which we cannot engage fully in society.”
“The current law is reinforced by a Guidance note issued by the Department for Education which states:
All maintained schools must provide religious education and daily
collective worship for all registered pupils and promote their spiritual,
moral and cultural development.
“I fully support this.”
