Calls for pop-up bar to become permanent fixture in Cleethorpes sparks debate

The Box Bar located on Cleethorpes Promenade for the International Market has become a huge drawing point for both locals and tourists.

Large seating areas overlook the picturesque Cleethorpes Beach, whilst the well-stocked bar is neatly contained in an old storage unit, decorated with industrial-inspired lighting.

The International Market made a triumphant return to Cleethorpes this week, with hundreds walking down the promenade to sample exotic food, delicious sweets, and mouth-watering drinks.

Due to the success and location of Box Bar, some have called for it to become a permanent fixture in the resort.

Local Ray Corke posted the image sparking the debate, writing: “Just been for a visit to the international food market on the prom and stopped for a drink at this makeshift bar overlooking the beach! And it occurred to me wouldn’t it be nice to make it a permanent feature over the summer months as it was proving very popular! What are other people’s thoughts on this?”

A large debate took place in the comments, with one local stating: “Great idea and atmosphere. While I’ve enjoyed the variety, I feel I would be inclined to spend more if I knew these were all local businesses helping the local economy.”

Another added: “Great idea. The only thing is we’re in a heat wave. Can’t be sure we’d always have this weather for an outdoor bar. Another year, if it were more normal summer weather, there’d be no customers.”

Many echoed calls for a permanent outdoor bar but added that it should instead be run by a local independent business and not one from out of town.

One such person said: “Great idea but why not use local business from North East Lincolnshire? Instead of people shipped in from out of town.

“It’s clearly proving popular. We have lots of independent traders locally who would have jumped at the chance I’m sure.”

What do you think? Let us know in the comments!
