Alert issued as heatwave set for parts of the UK

There will be parts of the UK that are predicted to experience a heat wave, over the next few days, the Met Office has said.

From Friday, there will be temperatures of 28C in parts of the country, kickstarting the heat wave.

There has been a level 2 heat-health alert issued ahead of the weather, issued by the UK Health Security Agency. The warning is in place covering Monday 11 July until Friday 5 July, for the east of England, southeast, and London.

The Met Office cites a heatwave from high temperatures being recorded for three consecutive days. A previous heatwave was recorded just three weeks ago, 17 June, which was the hottest day of the year so far.

Temperatures are expected to be in the region of the high 20s over the weekend, chief meteorologist David Oliver predicted.

BBC Weather presenter Nick Miller said:

“Temperatures are set to rise this weekend lasting into at least the first half of next week.

“Parts of England and Wales will see highs in the upper 20s and low 30s Celsius for several days and meet the criteria for an official heatwave to be declared.

“Some places are likely to see their highest temperature of the year so far.”

The BBC reported there were 2,500 excess deaths in the summer of 2020, with the British Red Cross predicting heat-related deaths could treble in 30 years.
