PM’s position is ‘untenable’ says Cleethorpes MP
Martin Vickers, the Cleethorpes MP and member of the 1922 Executive committee has said that Johnson’s position as Prime Minister is ‘untenable’.
This week has seen more than 50 people resign from Government or party roles since Tuesday night.
Mr. Johnson is expected to resign today as Conservative leader, but as PM until Autumn, when a new Conservative leader is in place.
Mr. Vickers has now written in a letter to Jonathan Evison, chairman of the Conservative Association in Cleethorpes, regarding a change of circumstances and stance on the PM’s struggle.
The letter, received by GI Grimsby News yesterday evening stated:
“At 10.33 this morning I messaged the 1922 Chairman, Sir Graham Brady, to the effect that until now I felt that it was not in the best
interests of the country for the PM to stand down and create a vacuum at the heart of Government for a period of six or seven weeks during which time the Party would elect a new leader, when it would be better for them to focus on the many challenges we, as a nation, face.
“However, we now have chaos at the heart of Government which, in itself, creates that vacuum.
“Without the cavalier approach that Boris Johnson took to ensure we delivered on the Brexit referendum we would not have delivered on the verdict of the British people. For that, we can be thankful, but the events of recent weeks have clearly shown that, as I say above, his position is now untenable.
“If the Conservatives are to win the next General Election we must demonstrate that we have a Government that can build on the measures already taken to protect constituents from the worst impact of the energy crisis and the consequences of the tragic events in Ukraine.
“We now need a government that can address these challenges. I believe that a Conservative administration is the best equipped to see us through the difficult years that lie ahead, and that must be our focus, free from other distractions.
“I know that our supporters are concerned and perplexed about the situation we find ourselves in, but I am confident that with the goodwill and resilience of constituents in the Cleethorpes constituency and throughout the country we can overcome the difficult circumstances in which we find our country.”
