Calls to make Cleethorpes Eye a permanent fixture could be considered by council

This Armed Forces weekend saw the triumphant return of the iconic Cleethorpes Eye which gave locals and tourists a beautiful view of the resort.

Situated next to Cleethorpes Leisure Centre, the tourist attraction is a much-loved feature and residents don’t seem eager to let it go.

When asked by Gi Media if they felt the wheel should become a permanent fixture masses called on the council to make it a reality.

One person said: “Yes Cleethorpes should have its own big wheel plus all the stalks and rides along the seafront from Brighton slipway to leisure centre should be here all summer. The council can hire the spaces out to them.”

Another said: “My son age 16 said, now that armed forces weekend has gone, there’s nothing in Cleethorpes.

“It’s true look how many people came, and just having the big wheel and a couple of rides, and things to do, made it so much more fun for bigger kids as well as little ones. They just need to do something and they can if they put their mind to it.

“We don’t want more caravans pubs cafés. What’s for the kids. Why don’t they think of them. We used to have wonderland and pleasure Island, now nothing.”

Although North East Lincolnshire Council hasn’t confirmed plans to make the wheel permanent, they haven’t ruled out the idea either.

Cllr Phillip Jackson praised the success of the Armed Forces weekend and encouraged locals to submit ideas such as the Cleethorpes eye for the Cleethorpes Masterplan.

Cllr Jackson said: “The Armed Forces weekend was a great event, enjoyed by thousands of people. Ideas like this can be considered alongside the other work going on in Cleethorpes as part of the Masterplan and we’re always grateful for people getting involved in the long-term future plans for the resort.”
