Pub opening hours to be extended for Platinum Jubilee

Opening hours for pubs and bars have been extended in England and Wales for the June Bank holiday celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Parliament is to pass a motion today that will reportedly extend opening times across the country, with the change being temporary for the holiday.

The Government has said the move would not be extended to cover premises that provide alcohol to go, for example, supermarkets and off-licenses.

The Home Secretary, Priti Patel said “For 70 years Her Majesty The Queen has served the UK and the Commonwealth with the utmost dignity, steadfastness, and resolve.

“Over the extended Bank Holiday weekend, we will be able to raise a glass to toast Her Majesty’s incredible service to our country, while also providing a boost to the hospitality industry after a challenging couple of years.”

The opening hours will be extended from 11 pm to 1 am, to be in place from Thursday 2nd June to Saturday 4th June.

The move is to mark Queen Elizabeth’s 70th year on the throne, which will have a four-day weekend for those celebrating.

The Culture Secretary, Oliver Dowden has promised a ‘celebration to remember for the occasion, the longest reign for a serving monarch.

In 2020, The Culture Secretary said “We can all look forward to a special, four-day Jubilee weekend when we will put on a spectacular, once-in-a-generation show that mixes the best of British ceremonial splendour with cutting edge art and technology.

“It will bring the entire nation and the Commonwealth together in a fitting tribute to Her Majesty’s reign.”
