Humberside Police officer struck off after working the second job on sick leave

A Humberside Police officer has been struck off the force after working a second job whilst on paid sick leave.

The officer worked a second job at a chicken farm after a work accident on May 16 rendered him unable to attend to his profession.

A misconduct hearing heard that he worked two days at a farm doing office work to bring in an extra income.

PC Moss, who served for three years as an officer based with the Hull patrol team at Clough Road, resigned in November.

According to reports, the officer had previously informed Humberside Police in 2019 that he worked a second part-time job, at Annyalla Chicks Ltd.

He has been struck off after it was discovered he had worked there while signed off in May and June last year.

The hearing held at Goole on Monday heard how PC Moss had a meeting about returning to work, telling his sergeant that he needed more time to recover, without mentioning the second job.

PC Moss was found guilty of gross misconduct on the grounds of honesty and integrity about working the second job, later admitting in the interview he had taken the second job to pick up extra money.

A Humberside Police representative, Simon Mallett, said that Moss had been off “to obtain further remuneration while he was off sick because he could have just gone back to the force and done the same type of administrative work for them.”

Mr. Mallett said the officer has misled his Sergeant, reportedly receiving a written warning previously in March.

A Humberside Police Federation representative for Moss, Detective Sgt Lee Sims said Mr. Moss would regularly work on his days off, insinuating many officers do the same.

“He has apologised to his sergeant and said he never had any intention to mislead anyone.”
