Boris Johnson faces grilling in today’s PMQs
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and Boris Johnson shared a fiery debate in today’s PMQs as the prime minister faced a grilling over his party fine.
After Mr Johnson opened the session by wishing the Queen a happy birthday for tomorrow, Sir Keir asked why Allegra Stratton had to resign over her joke about lockdown parties but the prime minister has not over breaking the law.
The PM said he “bitterly regrets” her resignation.
When asked by Sir Keir if he accepts that he broke the law, Johnson said that he “humbly accepts ” what the police said amongst jeers and shouting in the House.
He added he thinks MPs would rather see them get on with their jobs before criticising Labour for having no plans on energy.
The topic swiftly moved onto the Rwanda plan, with the PM stating he was”taken back” by criticism as Tony Blair’s Labour government proposed a similar motion.
Starmer then called the PM’s response a “a mealy-mouthed apology when the cameras roll, a vicious attack on those who tell the truth as soon as the cameras are off”.
SNP’s Ian Blackford then took to the floor, stating that while the PM may have convinced his party to keep him, the public is “not so easily fooled.”
He added that Johnson should hand in his resignation to the Queen before her birthday tomorrow.
In response, Mr Johnson resorted back to his rhetoric that he is “getting on with the job at hand”.
Despite his attempts to change the topic, the PM continuously faced questions from the opposition on his rule breaking.
Starmer accused the PM of refusing to resign with honour, “slandering” the Archbishop of Canterbury and “disrespecting” the institutions of the UK.
