Cleethorpes MP supports PM’s comment that trans women shouldn’t compete in female sports

Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers has backed the Prime Minister on his comments about trans athletes competing in sports.

Last week Boris Johnson made comments to the press about trans athletes competing in various sports, stating that “biological males should not be competing in female sporting events.”

He added: “It just seems to me to be sensible.

“I also happen to think that women should have spaces – whether it is in hospitals or prisons or changing rooms or wherever – which are dedicated to women.”

The PM added: “That doesn’t mean that I am not immensely sympathetic to people that want to change gender, to transition and it is vital that we give people the maximum possible love and support in making those decisions.”

Mr Johnson’s comments follow trans British cyclist Emily Bridges being excluded from competing in a women’s event after organisers found she was not eligible.

The 21-year-old began hormone therapy last year to start her transition and was set to compete in a women’s event for the first time at the British National Omnium Championships.

The prime minister also promised a ban on conversion therapy for gay and bisexual people but for those who identify as transgender.

This decision comes despite the NHS warning that all conversion therapy is harmful and unethical.

Gi Media asked the MPs for Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Scunthorpe, and Brigg for their view on the matter, only Vickers replied.

His statement simply read: “I fully support the Prime Minister’s comments.”
