Council issues explanation for Cleethorpes bus stop ‘disaster’

A bus stop which was recently installed on Sea Road in Cleethorpes has been removed after its peculiar placement caused a stir among locals.

The shelter, which was installed last month as part of a wider improvement scheme, was placed directly in front of two otherwise perfectly functional benches making them inaccessible.

Residents pointed out that there is an empty space directly adjacent to where the shelter has been placed, and contractors quickly reappeared to remove the bus stop.

Now, North East Lincolnshire Council have issued a statement explaining what happened.

The authority have also confirmed that the bus stop will be relocated at no expense to the council.

Speaking to Gi Grimsby News a spokesperson said: “The installation of the bus shelter on Sea Road, Cleethorpes was part of the Sea Road Public Realm works overseen by EQUANS.

“Its initial location, subject to explorative works was to be kerb-side, facing away from the carriageway, so making the benches accessible for pedestrians.

“The shelter has now been removed from the position it was installed in, and the paving will be reinstated.

“The shelter will be relocated to a more suitable position in the coming weeks, at no expense to the Council.”

It remains unclear why the bus stop was placed where it was.

Updates to follow.
