MPs vote to keep at-home abortion service
MPs in England have voted to allow women to continue accessing abortion services from home after the service was introduced at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The measure was implemented to avoid face-to-face appointments where possible, and has been hailed by many as a huge step forward for women’s health services.
Prior to this, women were required to attend a consultation in person before being given two pills – one to take at the clinic, and a second at home.
Lockdown measures saw video consultations introduced, after which women were allowed to take both pills at home.
The service has now been accessed by more than 150,000 people.
The government had intended on axing the at-home service post-lockdown.
But in a recent debate, MPs voted to keep the change.
Claire Murphy, chief executive of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, argued that the service made it easier for vulnerable women to access abortions.
