Suggitt’s Lane bridge infrastructure costs revealed
The cost of installing infrastructure associated with the new Suggitt’s Lane footbridge in Cleethorpes has been revealed.
According to the latest report, the installation of new CCTV cameras, columns and footpaths cost North East Lincolnshire Council a total of £70,000.
The revelation has sparked controversy, with most agreeing that the infrastructure upgrade is necessary in order to deter anti-social behaviour, but questioning the significant cost.
Suggitt’s Lane footbridge itself is reported to have cost £3.6m, however this, unlike the associated infrastructure and ongoing maintenance, was funded jointly by Network Rail and the Department for Transport.
The announcement comes as part of a document which also demonstrates how a new borough-wide CCTV upgrade is expected to more than double in price.
The upgrade is expected to cost an extra £1.25m on top of the £1m already approved.
A report issued by North East Lincolnshire Council reads: “The CCTV network is beyond its life expectancy and requires investment.
“A decision to not invest resulting in the system falling into disrepair could impact on the confidence of residents and businesses.
“It would also impact on the council’s ability to assist both the police and fire services in the apprehension and prosecution of perpetrators of crimes or anti-social behaviour and the NELC enforcement team in investigating and prosecuting perpetrators of environmental crimes.”
