A local drone photographer has captured a fantastic birds-eye view of the salt-marsh close to Cleethorpes Leisure Centre.

Speaking to Gi Grimsby News, Chris Warne of APS Drones said:

“The image is a stitch of 72 images, made using a DJI Mavic 2 Zoom.

“I mapped the area earlier in the month.

“One, to show a substantial area of the marsh (28 acres). Two to show the dangers that catch numerous people out each year.

“The coast guard do a valiant job rescuing folk from the marsh, the last being a casualty who was only found because a passer by raised the alarm.

“There needs to be much more signage showing the dangers of the area.”

Local saltmarshes serve as a rest and feeding ground to a number of species’ of migratory winter birds and local flora and fauna.

A narrow band of sand runs behind the salt marsh, connecting Cleethorpes and Humberston Fitties beaches.

This area has been growing steadily in the area for some time and is currently undergoing its first clean in seven years after concerns that a large area of the beach could be lost as a result of the growth.

Work to cut down overgrown scrub and vegetation has begun as part of a project called Dynamic Dunescapes.

It is hoped that removing certain areas of overgrowth will help to support wildlife in the area and reduce the dangers to walkers.

A spokesperson for North East Lincolnshire Council said: “The saltmarsh is a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) and is a great, unique natural habitat for wildlife and migratory birds.

“Saltmarshes also have an important part to play in fighting climate change, capturing more carbon dioxide than rainforests.

“Whilst our resort team do manage the site to prevent it from encroaching onto our beaches, Natural England limit how much we can remove.”

Work began in December and is expected to take around five years to complete.
