By Beachcomber changes name to honour Cleethorpes history
The infamous Beachcomber in Cleethorpes has announced that it will be changing its name to honour the town history.
The resort will now be called Cleethorpes Pearl Holiday Park.
Away Resorts, who also own Tattershall Lakes in Lincolnshire, took over Beachcomber’s ownership last April.
The new name honours the relatively unknown history of the town, which was a famed oyster farming location until the early 20th century.
Taking to Facebook to announce the change the owners said: “We’re excited to announce the new name Cleethorpes Pearl Holiday Park, previously known as Beachcomber!
“To signify the change of ownership and our commitment to enhancing the park and the customer experience, we plan to change the name of the park from Beachcomber Holiday Park to ‘Cleethorpes Pearl Holiday Park.’
“Why this name you may be asking? Well, firstly the park is an absolute Pearl of a location and deserves a name to give it stand out! But more interestingly, as you may know, Cleethorpes (so named following the merger of Clee and the surrounding villages or ‘thorpes’ as they were known) was historically a famed Oyster farming location until the 1920’s and we like to consider the history of all the parks in our portfolio.”
The name change has received a mixed reaction from locals.
One person commented: “To me, I will always call it beachcomber I spent many years on this site growing up treasured memories forever.”
Another wrote: “More likely that people will be going to the Beachy than going to the Pearl … hasn’t got the same ring to it.”
However, some have taken a shine to the new name, commenting: “Nice name, looking forward to returning in March.”
