Seal rescued after Christmas visit to Cleethorpes beach

Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue have saved a young seal after it became stuck on the beach on Christmas Day.

The team were called after a resident discovered the seal near to the Humberston Fitties area, below a stretch of eroding coastline which already has signs of recent landslides.

The animal appeared to be stuck in an area surrounded by sharp wood and brambles, and according to the organisation, would’ve struggled to get back to the tide after it’s rest and potentially injured itself without assistance.

Due to the seal being underweight, additional advice was sought from a local marine medic before it was released near to the water.

In a statement issued by Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue, a spokesperson added: “Due to many sanctuaries being closed for Christmas Day, it was decided the best course of action for this seal would be to remove him from the danger and give him access back to the beach should he want to go into the tide (but not forcing him back into the water).

“It has been marked with a special spray so should he come back to shore for a rest in the morning, we will know it’s the same one and be able to act accordingly.

“As the tide is in at 9pm we expect to see the seal travel back into the water but come to rest again in the morning – As a precaution, if you’re walking your dog around the Humberstone Fitties, where possible, keep it on a leash or keep a close eye out as seals can have a very nasty bite!
“Please do not attempt to push it back to the water as seals need to rest and do not get too close. Feel free to send us a message if you have any concerns.”
