Government plans two-week lockdown for England

According to information published by The Times, government ministers are planning a two-week circuit breaker lockdown for England.

This would see a number of new restrictions introduced, and would hopefully control the current surge in omicron cases.

Post-Christmas measures are expected to include a ban on mixing indoors.

Leaked Sage minutes seen by the BBC said that without further government intervention hospital admissions could soar beyond 3,000 a day.

The minutes say: “If the aim is to reduce the levels of infection in the population and prevent hospitalisations reaching these levels, more stringent measures would need to be implemented very soon.”

“The timing of such measures is crucial,” continue the Sage minutes.

“Delaying until 2022 would greatly reduce the effectiveness of such interventions and make it less likely that these would prevent considerable pressure on health and care settings.”

A report by The Times added that although Boris Johnson has been presented with a number of options ranging from “mild guidance to nudge people, right through to lockdown”, he has not yet approved the plans.

On Friday he insisted he was not “closing things down”.

Victor Adebowale, Chairman of the NHS Confederation, told Times Radio that he “would support the circuit breaker. My members would support the circuit breaker.

TWe’ve been calling for plan B for some time now and we’re glad that it was voted through. I think the government has to be prepared to recall parliament if further interventions are needed.

“The fact of the matter is we should be taking the precautionary principle. We should be protecting our NHS and our public services. We have no economy without health.”

It is expected that under new rules, the rule of six would be reintroduced, with indoor mixing inside pubs and restaurants banned.

Schools and shops are not expected to shut.
