Winterton Town Council to cancel Christmas Eve carol singing event
Winterton Town Council have announced that they have been forced to cancel the Carol singing that was set to take place on Friday 24 December this year due to Covid-19.
With coronavirus cases on the rise across North Lincolnshire and the UK, the council decided it was too risky to hold a gathering right on Christmas.
It has been reported that cases are expected to rise further as the countdown to Christmas continues.
A spokesperson for the town’s council reported: “It is with a great amount of sadness that we have made the very difficult decision to cancel the Carol singing on Christmas Eve.
“The decision has been made following advice that the Covid cases are on the rise again and are expected to be extremely high by next week.
“Our duty of care to you, the Winterton Community, is of paramount importance, and we consider it is better that you have a happy and healthy Christmas with your loved ones than risk transmitting the virus at the Carol singing.”
As an apology, Winterton Town Council revealed that they will be keeping the Christmas lights in the town on during the day as well from now on in order to keep spirits high.
However, many locals have expressed their disappointment in the cancellation as it marks the second year in a row where rising cases have affected the holidays.
Some believe that the event should have continued; whilst cases are rising rapidly in the UK, the situation locally is not as drastic.
Others believe that the right decision was made with regard to the cancellation, stating that the risk of a wave of cases following Christmas is something everybody should be working towards avoiding.
The council have indicated their wishes to hold the event once again next year as normal.
