Is the popular Cleethorpes road Sea View Street or Seaview Street?

Local residents have raised the question of how the popular Cleethorpes road Sea View Street should be written.

On either side of the road at the junction between Sea View Street and Cambridge Road are two street signs.

However, while both indicate the right road, they are both written differently. One is written as Seaview Street and the other is written as Sea View Street.

This odd sight sparked a discussion in the Cleethorpes Memories Facebook group on how the road should be written.

While some shared the preferred way of writing the street name, the overall consensus was that the name has simply changed over time leading to two variations.

The author of the post, Trevor Ekins, shared some history behind the street name: “The thoroughfare between Cambridge St and High Cliff was originally known as Sea Lane. However, by 1871 Sea View Street (3 words) had been adopted.

“In 1891, Sidney Sussex College (owner of much of the land in Cleethorpes at that time) extended the roadway as far as St Peter’s Avenue. It was not until 1906 that this “extension” was fully developed with housing. I am indebted to the late Prof Alan Dowling, widely accepted as an expert on the origins of Cleethorpes street names, for providing the definitive answer to the photographic conundrum.”

When asked about the road, North East Lincolnshire Council said: “Both versions of the name are in existence, as the road signs suggest. This appears to be a long-running historical debate and not something we could really give you an answer on. It looks like the name has evolved over time.”
