Twist and Flip Academy set to expand in new home

A husband and wife have applied to transform an unused old warehouse into a dedicated gymnastics academy.

Nicky and Marc Nicol have applied to the council to convert the former Doric Anderton premises on King Edward Street into the Twist and Flip Gymnastics Academy.

Speaking in their application they stated:

“Our family owned business runs with our core group of qualified coaches, passionate about providing gymnastics to young people of all ages and abilities.

“The Academy’s ethos of inclusivity, where every child matters, regardless of ability, provides gymnastics from preschool to competitive levels in safe, friendly and professional environments.”

Twist and Flip have been teaching children for a decade and have been renting a space in the Grimsby Business Centre for eight years, having previously operated in a school out of hours.

They currently have five coaches but wish to double that number by 2023 and expand the number of classes they put on.

Their coaches also deliver classes within some schools to give children a taste of gymnastics and teach them the basics, hoping some will delve deeper.

They added: “We have wanted to grow the business and since coming out of covid we think this is the right time to grow.

“We have seen over the last 18 months the impact it has on young people by being closed due to the pandemic on their physical, mental and social well being and having the new venue means we will be able to offer consistent sessions for all our members in the day time and in the evening.

“Gymnastics is the foundation for any sport, therefore building determination, communication, confidence, along with flexibility, strength, coordination and balance is highly important for children in their early years.”

As well as helping children live a better life locally through sport, they have put on several events raising money for charities and good causes like Jo’s Cervical Cancer and the Neonatal unit at the Diana Princess of Wales Hospital.

A decision on the application is set to be made in the Winter.
