Government to fund restoration of Doncaster’s St James’ Baths
Part of the Government’s Levelling Up Fund will reportedly go towards the restoration of St James’ Baths in Doncaster.
The Grade II-listed building on Waterdale is finally set to be renovated after it closed to the public in 2013.
The abandoned swimming pool and baths were originally opened back in 1932 with a swimming pool that could be converted into a concert/dance venue.
The hall at St James’ Baths could reportedly hold up to 1,500 people at one time.
Many performers, including the Beatles in the 1960s, played gigs at the venue over the years.
The Turkish and Russian baths were situated in the basement and are still intact for the most part, despite being built over eight decades ago.
Unfortunately, in 2018, the roof of St James’ Baths collapsed after being abandoned for five years, but after repairs were made by Doncaster Council, it was put up for sale in 2019.
However, no bidders came forward.
This year, the money from the fund will be able to restore the 1930s St James’ Baths into a new spa and leisure facility.
The old central library and Copley House will also be demolished as part of the council’s plans to restore buildings that are either abandoned or run-down across the town.
Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the funding news – this is a real boost to Doncaster.
“The funding that we’ve secured will complement all the work underway with our partners to revitalise the town centre as part of our Urban Centre Masterplan increasing the attractiveness of Doncaster to encourage more people into the town.
“We welcome this further opportunity to progress the redevelopment of key areas of the town centre that will see [the] transformation of ageing and abandoned buildings into usable amenity space, providing an attractive public realm that encourages footfall, boosting green space and supporting active travel.
“In addition, […] civic pride [will be developed through] investing in culture, housing, infrastructure, connectivity and the environment.
“The projects will also support new businesses, many of which will create jobs, and the redevelopment of St James Baths will provide both employment opportunities and facilities that will enable residents to actively participate in sports and physical activity.”
She added: “We are immensely proud of Doncaster and passionate about further unlocking its huge potential as reflected in our recent bid for City Status.
“The £18.6m funding will assist in our journey to create a better future for our residents, businesses and visitors.”
