UK hotel quarantine to start on 15 February

The Government has revealed the full list of countries affected by the new hotel quarantine measures.

Hotel owners will be asked to provide rooms for more than 1,000 new people every day, documents suggest.

Quarantine hotels are expected to be set up near airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

The announcement appeared to have been rushed out after stinging criticism from Rob Paterson, the boss of the Best Western chain, who said hotels were still “in the dark” about what was planned.

Travellers returning from 33 “red list” countries will be forced to undergo a 10-day quarantine in hotels or other Government-provided accommodation.

Boris Johnson says it is 'not practical' to shut borders

Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the Commons that passengers returning from those countries will be “met at the airport and transported directly into quarantine”.

It is not yet clear how much the stays will cost travellers, however one hospitality industry source said the government estimated the cost at about £80 per night per person.

The government is expected to set out further details next week on how passengers will be able to book into the designated hotels.

A further 915 people have died within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test in the UK, according to the government’s daily figures.

This brings the total number of people to die within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test to 110,250.
