Dame Vera Lynn has died aged 103

Dame Vera Lynn, the Forces’ Sweetheart whose songs helped raise morale in World War Two, has died aged 103, it has been announced.

The sad news has been confirmed by personal assistant and long-time family friend Susan Fleet.

She said:

“The family of are deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of Britain’s best-loved entertainers at the age of 103.

“Dame Vera Lynn lived in Ditchling, East Sussex.

“She passed away earlier today,18 June 2020, surrounded by her close family.

“Further information regarding a memorial service will be announced at a later date.”

Dame Vera, who lived in Ditchling, East Sussex, boosted the nation’s morale during the darkest days of World War Two.

She provided hope and reassurance for Allied troops and families.

She was also honoured countless times in her lifetime for her services to entertainment and charity.

Recently, on VE Day 2020, she hosted a televised singalong of her most famous song, ‘We’ll Meet Again’.

Speaking at the time, Dame Vera Lynn said that while people would be apart, “hope remains even in the most difficult of times”.

In March, she urged people to ‘keep calm’ as we faced uncertain times due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking about turning 103 on March 20, this year, she commented:

“Thank you all for the kind gifts, cards and gestures I received to celebrate my birthday this year.

“Once again, I am overwhelmed by everyone’s kindness and generosity, and am so grateful to you all for helping me to mark this milestone.

“I feel very fortunate to have reached 103.

“My day will be made all the more special by hearing from people all around the world.

“I care very much about the work it does and the donations received around my birthday are the best gift imaginable.”
