Man charged with terrorism offences in Hull

Humberside Police have charged a man with two counts of encouraging terrorism after a street disturbance in Hull.

Officers were called to Cheadle Close on Saturday following reports of man armed with a knife shouting in the street.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray.

He was released and and later re-arrested on suspicion of offences under section 41 of the Terrorism Act the same day.

Humberside Police Chief Superintendent Scott Young said:

“The detention, subsequent charging and remand of a man following his arrest on Cheadle Close, Hull, on Saturday 13 June, should provide reassurance for the local community.

“We continue to believe this to be an isolated incident with no wider risk to the public and thank the local residents for their support throughout.”

The man has been remanded and will appear before Judge Kitson at Leeds Magistrates’ Court today, Thursday 18 June.

He has not been named at this time.

The investigation is being led by Counter Terrorism Policing North East.

Following the instance where the man was arrested over terrorism offences in Hull, but prior to being charged, Chief Superintendent Scott Young from Humberside Police said:

“We appreciate that this may be a concerning time for the local community.

“We do believe this to be an isolated incident with no wider risk to the public.

“We would like to thank you for your support and patience at this time.”

A statement for Humberside Police added that they are constantly working to ensure our communities are safe from the evolving threat posed by terrorists.
