Works to Cleethorpes paths to resume

Cleethorpes regeneration programme update

WORK to transform Cleethorpes’ carriageways and paths will resume in the New Year, as multi-million-pound improvements to the resort continue.

With funding from the Coastal Communities Fund secured by CoastNEL, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, North East Lincolnshire Council and the Local Transport Programme, more than £7million is being invested into changing the physical landscape of Cleethorpes.

Running alongside the extensive works to the carriageways and paths, plans to preserve the resort’s heritage are also progressing with projects concentrating on structures of architectural importance, such as the old Empire Theatre and Alexandra Road’s unique Victorian balconies.

Between now and Friday, 20 December contractors will be concluding the present round of improvements, before re-commencing the works on Monday 6 January. A rundown of the time scales are as follows:

Sea View Street pre-Christmas:

  • The street will be re-opened to traffic on 20 December to improve the footpaths and see a new layout applied to the street to help enhance the historic environment. The parking bays on the street will have been remarked to ease vehicle movements.
  • Additional works have been carried out in the car park outside the NatWest Bank, retaining the car park with 11 vehicle spaces and making the area and paving more flush, to help make it easily convertible into a quality, multi-use events space.

Sea View Street starting on 6 January:

  • Work will commence on the pedestrianisation of the Wardall Street ‘cut through’ between the Fisherman’s Arms and the retail unit currently under refurbishment. The ‘cut through’ will be completely closed to traffic and pedestrians for the expected five-week construction period.
  • The existing bus shelter outside Tale of Two will be replaced by the end of January.
  • Traffic management at the Sea View Street junction with Alexandra Road will return for approximately five weeks to enable the renewal of the path on the seaward side of Alexandra Road.

Sea Road, Market Street and Alexandra Road pre-Christmas:

  • By Friday 20 December works on the north side of the junction up to the High Street mini roundabout will be completed.
  • Traffic will revert to normal movements at the existing roundabout except for the introduction of the permanent one-way system on Market Street, from Dolphin Street, heading towards Alexandra Road.

Sea Road, Market Street and Alexandra Road during January:

  • Monday 6 January will see contractors back on site to complete works to the south side of the junction, in Market Street and upgrade the current roundabout, which has been deemed not fit for purpose in the Local Transport Programme, (LTP).
  • A puffin signal-controlled pedestrian crossing will be installed on the south-side of the new roundabout.
  • The above work is expected to take five weeks to complete and for its duration Market Street will be closed, up to Dolphin Street, with three-way temporary signals operating at the junction.
  • Towards the end of these works there will be night time closures to allow for resurfacing.

As previously reported, these works are part of the wider regeneration of Cleethorpes, which also includes public art works along the North Prom as the resort looks to continually improve itself as a major visitor attraction along the East coast.

North East Lincolnshire Council’s Regeneration lead, Cllr John Fenty, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those affected by these works for their support and assistance. While we appreciate that such extensive projects do come with some challenges, we are confident that the results will significantly enhance Cleethorpes as a resort where a growing number of people wish to visit, allowing visitor numbers and business to grow side-by-side.”
