This week see the prestigious William Hill St Leger Festival at Doncaster Racecourse.
The St Leger Festival boasts 4 days of racing. From 11-14 September, Doncaster is the focus for many in the horse racing world, locally, national and globally. The St Leger Festival is the World’s Oldest Classic, and the only classic in Yorkshire.
Visitors to St Leger can expect to experience top-class horse racing, plus live entertainment at the end of each day.
Day One sees retired jockeys dust off their breeches and saddles, and return to action for a charity race. This is run on the straight mile, and raises money for the Northern Racing College and Jack Berry House, a rehabilitation facility for injured jockeys.
Day Two is Ladies Day, often argued to be Yorkshire’s biggest social occasion. As well as hats and fine frocks on display, women also take centre stage in the racing, with the running of the Silk Series final, a flat race series specifically for female jockeys. After racing is over, there is a DJ Set from Melanie C Live.
Day Three has become known as Gentleman’s Day. Racing includes the Doncaster Cup, the oldest race currently run under the Rules of Horse Racing.
Day Four is the biggest day of the week. The showpiece race is the St Leger Stakes, the world’s oldest Classic. On Monday, at the 5-day stage, it was announced that 11 horses remain entered for this race.
Rupert Adams, of sponsors William Hill, commented “We’re absolutely delighted with the strength in depth of the entries for the William Hill St Leger on Saturday. Logician (Evs) is a worthy favourite having landed the Great Voltigeur at York last time out and with Frankie Dettori on board, he is sure to be well supported.”
At time of writing, the Clerk of the Course Roderick Duncan reported the going to currently be Good to Firm.
