All cars are going to have the technology to be able to wake drivers up who are falling asleep.
Within five years it is likely to become mandatory for all cars to have advanced technology systems that can track drivers eyes when they are in danger of falling asleep. It could prevent hundreds of road deaths each year.
Some manufacturers cars have the system already available. The monitoring system measures the percentage of time a driver’s eyes are closed. If it appears that they are getting drowsy an alert will sound urging them to take a break.
If it is one of the most advanced versions when the warning is ignored the car will enter an emergency state and reduce its speed automatically. A message will be sent to a call centre requesting a call is made to the driver. If the driver does not respond an emergency stop can be activated. The on-call system will stay on the line and send further help if needed.
New rules have been bought in by the European Parliament that are almost certain to make the rules compulsory for newly introduced models from May 2022, and all new vehicles from May 2024. The timescale will be similar in the UK regardless of Brexit.
The decision on if the requirements should be mandatory in the UK will be made at a later date by the Government.
