Grimsby Corinthians over 60s team made the journey to southern Lincolnshire yesterday to play in a Tournament organised jointly by Boston United and Swineshead Institute football teams.
Some 22 teams took part in two age categories and Corinthians were placed in a group alongside Leeds Titans, United Allstars, Boston United and Spilsby Strollers. Corinthians were also represented at the Tournament by Mick Hill acting as Head Referee and officiating games in the over 50s category. Corinthians as a mark of respect wore black armbands in memory of a great friend Ian Mackinnon , a member of Grimsby Ancient Mariners, who passed away last week. Corinthians were determined to do well in memory of Ian and although not on top form finished their group games undefeated and having not conceded a goal. Keith Jenkins making his debut in goal for Corinthians dealing with everything that came his way. Grimsby Ancient Mariners were also competing at the event but unfortunately didn’t progress out of their group and set up a meeting between the two sides. It was great to see the Mariners lads at the event and both teams supporting each others efforts.
Corinthians went into their semi final against Coningsby and won 3-1 to set up a final against Norwich. The two clubs met earlier this season in another tournament final which went narrowly the way of Norwich by 1-0. Norwich are a well drilled side and play to their strengths. Although Corinthians were probably the slightly stronger side in the final it was Norwich who once gain came out on top by 1-0. Corinthians had chances to score but squandered their opportunities and the goal was sloppily given away. So hard luck Corinthians, not quite enough in the end. Perhaps we could have done with a goal from the late Ian Mackinnon in the final , RIP Ian, thoughts with your family and friends truly a great guy.
