Three sisters set to take fun run by storm

The 1.2km St Hugh’s Hospital Family Fun Run is open to everyone of any age or ability. It starts at 9.30am on Sunday 21 July outside Grimsby Town Hall, shortly before the main event, the Ørsted Great Grimsby 10K.

The race finishes at People’s Park where runners will get a medal and sweets and can enjoy the Finish Line Festival that has lots of fun activities, food and drink stalls and places to picnic or play.

Entry costs £5 and there are discounts available for family/group entries (all entries must be on the same order to qualify and the discount will be applied at the checkout page).

Local sisters Megan age 11, and twins Maddielynn and Brooklynn, age nine are coming back for their third St. Hugh’s Hospital Family Fun Run.

Megan said: “I’m really looking forward to the Grimsby Fun Run. I’m trying to get beat my time from last year.”

Maddielynn said: “I’m quite competitive; I’m only a few seconds behind Megan and I’m always trying to catch up to her.
“It would be great if I could be one of the first few out of the girls and boys to get through the finish line!”
“Even if I wasn’t one of the first I would still have a great run. I’d just keep trying.”

Twin sister Brooklynn said: “Megan and Maddie are always trying to beat each other but I really like running for fun.”

She added: “I like the crowds and the excitement, but I don’t mind hanging back and running with a friend- even if it means I don’t get the best time.”

All the girls are excited to add the Fun Run medal to their collection.

“We have over 30 medals and trophies from different sports. We have taken them to school to talk about the things we have done to get them and our friends think it’s really cool.”

Megan said: “When we are old enough we want to run the Grimsby 10k.”

She added: “I think every kid should do the Fun Run, but if running isn’t your thing there are lots of other sports you can do to have fun and keep your body healthy.”

The girls said: “We like the Fun Run because we run faster when there is a crowd.”

Part of the girl’s inspiration to run is their dad Lee who will be running the Ørsted Great Grimsby 10k which takes place just after the Fun Run.

He said: “There are local activities available for kids but they aren’t always easy to find. The kids who do join are more likely to have parents who are into sports like me.
“It would be good if we could break the mould so more parents from outside of these circles knew about sports in our area.
“Because of her love of sports Megan was selected for a Gifted and Talented sports programme which took her to an athletics stadium in Sheffield and gave her the chance to do activities like boxing, twist and flip and tennis.
“Running has really opened doors for our kids, we recommend any parent to do it.”

The girls are part of a local running club, the Grimsby Harriers where they also do track and field events like shotput and long jump. http://grimsbyharriers.org.uk/
