Cleethorpes Cricket Club are still looking for a first victory over Sheffield Collegiate

Cleethorpes Cricket Club are still looking for a first victory over Sheffield Collegiate in the 4 Probate & Wills ECB Yorkshire South Premier League.

Their latest attempt, at Chichester Road on Saturday, was thwarted by the weather, although the Sheffield side were in the driving seat before rain resulted in the game being abandoned.

James Osmond, the Cleethorpes Captain, won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first on a dry and firm wicket.

A flamboyant innings from former Suffolk batsman Sam Webb-Snowling soon got the scoreboard moving. A series of well struck boundaries saw him race to 46 out of the first 50 runs scored, with his partner, Daniel Priestley, content to play a supporting role.

The opening partnership was worth 58 before Lee Charlton, coming on as first change bowler, had the adventurous Webb-Snowling caught by Bill Kirby when he was just a solitary run short of a half century.

Despite Joe Baker bowling an accurate ten over spell which included four maidens the score continued to increase at an alarming rate. The Cleethorpes attack was rotated in an effort to breakthrough without success until teenager Jack Holmes was brought into action.
The youngster continued his habit of picking up important wickets when he had Sam Hunt, who had scored an impressive 74, smartly stumped by James Osmond. The second wicket had added 131 with opening batsman Priestley unbeaten on 68.

The persistent rain then became heavier and the umpires took the players from the field with the visitors on 195-2 from 36.2 overs. After a three hour stoppage the umpires decided they had no alternative but to abandon the game which resulted in each side being awarded 4 points.
With games between the other top clubs suffering the same fate the league positions remain unchanged with 16 points separating them –  Doncaster Town 80, Wakefield Thornes 76, Sheffield Collegiate 74, Cleethorpes 64.
